Close by, the traditional fishing village of Beserah is famous for its salted fish. Five kilometres south lies Teluk Cempedakâ’s splendid beach. Further north, at Cherating (32km), is another sun-soaked golden beach where visitors can meet friendly villagers and watch nimblefingered girls weave pandanus leaves into mats, hats and bags. To the south, lies the enchanting island of Tioman, with its fabled beaches, and wildflowers growing in vivid profusion and cool waterfalls cascading down verdant slopes. It is accessible by ferry from Mersing.
Colourful batiks, woodcarvings, Dara jade jewellery and pretty shell craft are some of the items for tourists to bring back as souvenirs, while skilled workers can be seen weaving silk sarongs also known as Tenun Diraja Pahang with intricate designs in gold and silver at these the brocade-weaving centre at Kampung Selamat.
